Five Week 2 high school football games to watch

Benet Academy (1-0) at Glenbard North (1-0)

We've got a few matchups in DuPage County between 1-0 teams. The Redwings made James White's debut as coach a good one, beating defending 1A state champ Lena-Winslow, 34-28. They struggled last year against Glenbard North, losing 41-14, and the Panthers will try to repeat that result led by senior Angelo Gatses, who rushed for four touchdowns in Week 1 and made eight tackles on defense. Like White, Glenbard North's new coach Justin Kerwin won his first game last week.

Warren Township (0-1) at Maine South (0-1)

It’s strange to see these teams enter with 0-1 records, though they both challenged themselves in Week 1 playing state powers Loyola and Batavia. While the Blue Demons were shut out by the Ramblers, the Hawks did put 35 points on the board against Batavia led by Payton Donaldson’s 147 rushing yards and two scores. Maine South won this matchup last year 42-14, the start of a 10-game winning streak, while Warren recovered from that loss with eight straight wins to run the table in the North Suburban.

Oswego (1-0) at Geneva (1-0)

Geneva should learn a lot about itself Friday against an Oswego team that took second in Class 8A in 2025 and dominated this matchup a year ago, winning 35-6. Senior quarterback Ben Peterson (Eastern Michigan) and senior receiver Bennett Konkey (Illinois) give the Vikings plenty of firepower. This game should do nothing but help the Vikings as they turn to DuKane Conference play with St. Charles North and Wheaton Warrenville South the next two weeks, then Batavia in Week 6.

Lyons Township (1-0) at Wheaton Warrenville South (1-0)

The Tigers welcome back one of the best ever at the school, Jon Beutjer, a record-setting quarterback in 1998 and now the Lions’ head coach. His team is coming off an impressive 24-19 win over Barrington. The Tigers also played well last week beating Naperville Central by 20. New quarterback AJ Rogers threw for two touchdowns in the win while junior Trent Simpson had a 74-yard touchdown run.

Leyden (1-0) at Elk Grove (1-0)

It’s the first time since 2012 both teams are 1-0 in the same season. Keep an eye on Elk Grove quarterback Luke Maher, who threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 20-6 win over Maine West. Isaiah Albazi scored on an interception return.
