Rolling Meadows man charged with illegally possessing machine gun
A Rolling Meadows man faces charges alleging he illegally possessed a loaded gun that had been altered to make it fully automatic.
Iziah Benavidez, 23, of the 2400 block of Algonquin Road, was ordered detained in the DuPage County jail after appearing in DuPage’s first-appearance court Tuesday afternoon.
He is charged with one count of unlawful possession of a weapon ― machine gun, one count of burglary and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, all felonies.
Benavidez also is charged with two counts of retail theft, one a felony and one a misdemeanor, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
According to prosecutors, Elmhurst police on Monday made a traffic stop involving a vehicle that had been linked to an Aug. 9 shoplifting case. During the stop, prosecutors said, officers found a loaded 10 mm Glock 29, with a 24-round magazine and a switch under the driver’s seat, and a 9 mm pistol in the glove box.
The 10 mm pistol was reported stolen in Chicago in January, authorities said.
The next court date for Benavidez is Sept. 14.
