Chargers outlook: The Chargers look to get off to another fast start following last season’s 3-0 and 6-1 onset. Aurora Central Catholic looks to return to the state playoffs after breaking a lengthy absence dating back to 2016. Joey Arch recorded 53 tackles and three sacks as a junior defensive end last season, while Kyle Stanislo collected 33 tackles with an interception at defensive back. Aidan Crisci, a four-year starter who has played several positions on both sides of the ball, will begin his first season at quarterback after compiling 444 all-purpose yards with three touchdowns. Billy Arch and junior Leo Corral recorded 53 and 35 tackles, respectively. The Chargers’ challenge will be replacing their top two rushers in Grant Bohr and Trey Seifrid, who combined for nearly 2,000 rushing yards. Crisci and sophomore fullback Billy Arch look to carry the load in the Chargers’ triple-option attack behind four-year starting tackle Joey Arch, who will anchor a talented offensive line. ACC begins its season at Lisle on Sept. 21.

Eagles outlook: Offensively, the Eagles had no problems putting points on the board last season, topping the 40-point mark in 7 of their 11 games. However, quarterback Asa Johnson graduated and is now playing at Northern Illinois, leaving the duties to sophomore Juju Vasquez. The Eagles’ offensive line figures to be bolstered by the return of seniors TJ Anderson, Jason Haymon, Logan Mahon, and junior Justin Douglas. Skilled players Jalen Callaway, Jordan McGee, and Carson Moreno also return. Looking to make the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season, Aurora Christian enjoyed a great off-season, according to longtime coach David Beebe. After visiting Ottawa Marquette in Week 1, the Eagles picked up a Week 2 matchup against Class 8A foe Elgin.

Bartlett

Hawks outlook: Following four consecutive 4-5 seasons, the Hawks are looking to finish with a winning record in 2026. However, another 4-5 finish would get the Hawks into the playoffs for the first time since 2021 thanks to the expanded field. While the Hawks return nine starters, they have several starting positions to be claimed by the season opener against Conant on Aug. 21.

Bulldogs outlook: Coming off their third consecutive Class 7A state semifinal appearance, the Bulldogs enter the 2026 season with one of the most experienced senior classes in the state. Batavia returns its starting quarterback, Wyoming commit Michael Vander Luitgaren, running back Charlie Rosengren, and wide receiver Darin Ashiru, a Western Michigan commit — plus an experienced offensive line and numerous defensive leaders. The offensive line features Jackson Leather, Will Murphy, Dane Trowbridge, Ethyn Gotski, Bryce Grabske, and Daniel Alvarado. Wyoming commit Thomas Prescott is a two-way threat as a tight end and defensive lineman. Dennis Piron, who guided the Bulldogs to state titles in 2013 (Class 6A) and 2017 (7A), as well as runner-up 7A state showings in 2022 and 2024, enters what is expected to be the final season of one of the top coaching careers in IHSA history. Batavia, which has made 15 consecutive postseason appearances, kicks off its season against perennial power Maine South on Aug. 21.

Burlington Central

Rockets outlook: Despite graduating a good amount from last year’s team, the Rockets possess a strong group of returning players along with promising young talent. Iossi said the entire FVC is young this season, so the Rockets should be considered as a legitimate contender. Last season, Burlington Central challenged for the FVC title, finishing a game behind champion Prairie Ridge. Defense was one of the Rockets’ strengths last season, as they allowed fewer than 14 points per contest. The return of senior linebackers Ben Hultgren and Liam Schultz, senior linemen Tobi Oduwa, Logan Gibson, and Andrew Peterson, and senior defensive backs Parker Auxier and Bennek Braden, should lead another strong defensive unit.
Coach’s quote: “We return a lot of athletes on offense, so rebuilding our offensive line is a priority, and I think we have a great group of young players that are ready to step up,” Iossi said.
Cary-Grove
Coach: Brad Seaburg

Trojans outlook: Playoff football is nothing new for a Cary-Grove program that has qualified for the postseason 20 of the last 21 seasons. However, this year’s squad faces a challenge as the Trojans return the fewest starters and contributors in a long time. The Trojans possess an inexperienced team overall, even though they return some dynamic playmakers including junior quarterback Jackson Berndt and sophomore running backs Leo Zavala and Ty Tenopir. Zavala carried the ball for 105 yards and three touchdowns in his first varsity start against Dundee-Crown last season. The Trojans’ senior class is relatively small but motivated, and they have solid numbers throughout their other three classes. They will need to replace graduated all-state fullback Logan Abrams, now playing at Illinois State, as well as six of their seven offensive linemen/tight ends. Last year, Cary-Grove advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals before falling to Belvidere North, 17-10. If the new players step up, the Trojans have the potential as a solid playoff team this season.
Coach’s quote: “The FVC is a challenge every week, so finding kids to replace great kids from last year and finding them by week one will be a challenge, but we have an extremely dedicated team and program, and that doesn’t change from year to year,” Seaburg said.
Crystal Lake South
Coach: Rob Fontana

Gators outlook: Coming off a productive summer, the Gators return a three-year starter at quarterback in Michael Silvius, who earned all-FVC status as a junior last season, and the team’s second leading tackler from 2025 in linebacker Ethan Phillips. Silvius and Phillips bring experience, leadership, and a calming presence on both sides of the football. Graduating 22 players from last year, the Gators are looking to reach postseason play for the first time since 2022 and kick off its season against defending conference champion Prairie Ridge before visiting runner-up Burlington Central.
Coach’s quote: “Our goal is to get back into the playoffs, but more importantly, we want to build a team that our seniors can be proud of when that final home game is played,” Fontana said.
Dundee-Crown

Elgin

Maroons outlook: Thanks in part to a 2-0 start and a three-game winning streak toward the middle of the season, the Maroons reached the state playoffs last season for the first time since 2019. Rufino, a three-sport athlete, returns at quarterback alongside a veteran offensive unit that includes running backs Anthony Foster and La’Marin Powell. The return of offensive linemen Victor Escobar, Liam Martinez, and Giancarlo Galvan should add to the Maroons’ scoring production. Defensively, Elgin figures to field several two-way players, including Ja’Miere Moore, Lamontay Dobbins, Powell, and Rufino. Elgin opens the season with nonconference games against Woodstock North and Aurora Christian.

Geneva

Vikings outlook: Quarterback Ben Peterson, who passed for 1,573 yards and rushed for 300 yards while accounting for 24 total touchdowns last year, is an Eastern Michigan commit, while wide receiver Bennett Konkey, who had 41 receptions for 739 yards and 9 touchdowns, is an Illinois commit. Konkey, one of the fastest sprinters in the country with a 10.2 time in the 100-meter dash, will be joined at wideout by Luke Ignoffo, who caught 21 passes for 318 yards last season. Varsity veteran Nelson Wendell, who rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown in two games before going down with an injury, returns to bolster the backfield. Lincoln Mercado, who had 26 receptions and 6 touchdowns, is a Bemidji State commit. Mark Atkins, a Wisconsin-Eau Claire commit, anchors an offensive line that includes veterans Joey Ninni, Mason Dilks, and Oliver Egan. Tate Beran, who had three interceptions at defensive back, has received offers from Western Illinois, Butler, and St. Thomas. Additional defensive help will be provided by linebackers Jameson Barbat (68 tackles, 3 sacks) and Drew Smith (3 sacks, 7 tackles). Geneva, a playoff qualifier in four of the last five years, kicks off its season against perennial powers Libertyville and Oswego.

Whip-Purs outlook: Senior two-way standout Roman La Salvia, who will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines, has emerged as one of Hampshire’s leaders and continues to draw interest from Division II, III and NAIA programs, as is senior Cael Moore, a dynamic playmaker on both sides of the ball. Junior Griffin Chamberlain returns as Hampshire’s starting quarterback. First-year head coach Foster, a 2018 Carmel Catholic graduate, spent the past few seasons as the offensive coordinator at Mundelein. Hampshire, looking for its first playoff berth since 2021, enters the season with renewed energy and returns an experienced senior class, several talented two-way starters, and an impressive group of young players. Foster realizes that competing in the Fox Valley Conference will be a challenge.

Huntley

Colin Stien, a two-time returning starting guard and all-FVC selection last season, anchors the offensive line. Defensively, senior lineman Toluwani Ajayi has collected seven collegiate offers, while Jacob Marx is a returning two-way starter who had 34 receptions and two touchdowns with a pair of interceptions last year. Senior Carson Rowe, who was the team’s starting quarterback last year until he broke his ankle in week two, looks to make a big impact at wide receiver. The list of newcomers includes senior defensive back Coleson DeLaPaz, who was voted a team captain for 2026. Last year, the Red Raiders lost to Cary-Grove, Jacobs, and Prairie Ridge by 7, 8, and 1 points, respectively. Huntley, which kicks off its season against Hampshire on Aug. 21, faces a rugged back-to-back late stretch against Prairie Ridge and Burlington Central in Weeks 7 and 8.

Golden Eagles outlook: Junior two-way standout Jack Coates returns for his third year as a starter at linebacker and second year as a starter at tight end. Coach Brian Zimmerman said Coates is somewhat of an under-the-radar player but should receive more looks from colleges after this season. Junior quarterback Austin Stennett has grown three inches and added 20 pounds to his frame since last season and seems poised for a breakout year. Zimmerman also expects big things from sophomore Chris Williams, who will be a two-way starter at tight end and defensive end. Senior Randall Brown and sophomore Ronnie Brown will anchor the interior defensive line. Brown started every game as a freshman last season and has added 20 pounds in the off-season. Aiden Brunner, Nick Meyer, and Cooper Dolson should be important contributors on both sides. Jacobs, looking for its sixth consecutive postseason berth, will face perennial powers Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge in week one and three, respectively.

Royals outlook: It will be a season of firsts for Larkin’s football team this season. For starters, the Royals have a new varsity head coach in Jomari Villaluz, a 2019 graduate of Northern Illinois University who played defensive back at St. Charles North from 2012-2014. Larkin will also play football games on its home campus for the first time. Larkin’s home opener is against South Elgin on Sept. 4 at Royals Athletic Complex on Ray Haley Field. Ray Haley served as Larkin’s first head football coach in 1963. Junior Brian Watson figures to lead the Royals’ offense, while senior two-way player Jose Miranda anchors the defensive line at nose guard.

Marmion, which qualified for the playoffs two years ago in Guerra’s debut as head coach, opens its season against out-of-state opponent Racine Lutheran (Wis.) on Aug. 21.

The Saints return 13 starters, including four senior defensive backs, experienced linebackers, and defensive linemen. Nolan Possley expects Luciano Litro, Aiden Coyne, Dane Meyer, and Christian Hirniak to set the tone with effort and physicality. Competing in the rugged DuKane Conference will be a challenge, as the Saints are looking for their first postseason berth since 2019. Possley said the focus is not on preseason expectations — it’s on earning respect one week at a time by playing disciplined, physical football and continuing to improve throughout the season. The Saints begin their season at home against Metea Valley on Aug. 21.

Defensively, the North Stars figure to be strong up the middle with the return of Braden McPheeters, Aidan Bradley, linebacker Miguel Mendoza, and 2025 all-conference free safety Josh Wilkerson. Offensively, quarterbacks Landon Conroy and Dash Von Qualen hope to create matchup problems for opposing defenses. Holy Cross commit Chris Akpede leads a younger receiving corps that incudes Kiren Walker, Jameson Walters, Charlie O’Connell, Jack Leigle, Jaden Tran, Jaden Lee, and tight end Payton Urry, who has offers from Iowa State and UConn. All-DuKane guard Jonathan Medina anchors an offensive line that includes sophomore tackles Jaxon Feiza and Shawn Lazare.

At St. Edward, where the program owns a 1-26 mark the past three seasons, Archibald looks to establish a new culture and learning to compete while building a stronger future. The Green Wave, which snapped an 18-game losing streak with a 16-13 victory over Walther Christian in week two last season, welcomes the return of five offensive starters and five defensive starters. Seniors Connor Englum, Anthony Leadley, Brendan Horrell, Gavin Brunner, and Grant Whitworth will be expected to contribute on both sides of the ball. St. Edward kicks off its season with home games against Walther Christian (Aug. 21) and Lisle (Aug. 28).

Looking to improve upon back-to-back 3-6 seasons, Streamwood returns several key players from last year’s squad. The Sabres begin the season with nonconference opponents Elmwood Park and Round Lake.
