Blazers outlook: Coming off a memorable 8-2 campaign that saw the Blazers capture their first outright West Suburban Gold title since 2014, the team understands that last season’s record does not carry over into 2026. However, the Blazers return several experienced players, along with many others stepping into larger roles, and are ready to prove themselves. Junior Robert Morales takes over at quarterback following the graduation of veteran Nico Dill. The return of skilled players Ayden Smith, Louis Franczak, and Jaden Romeus should help Morales’ transition period. Seniors Elliott Ibarra and Ladis Mondragon will anchor the offensive line.

Redwings outlook: Three-time Super Bowl champion James White heads the Redwings program for his first season as head coach, taking over for Benet alum Pat New, who guided the team to a 92-67 record and 10 playoff berths in 16 seasons before stepping down after the 2025 campaign. Benet returns several players from last season, including linebacker/tight end Dean Meah, wide receiver/defensive back Luke Crowder, and running back/free safety Hawke Lawler. The Redwings got off to a 3-1 start a year ago before finishing the season with five consecutive losses. Benet kicks off its season at defending Class 1A state champion Lena-Winslow on Aug. 21. The Redwings will play their home opener against Niles Notre Dame on Sept. 11 at Benedictine University.
Downers Grove North

Trojans outlook: Running back Kevin Jay returns after rushing for more than 700 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior, while tailback Grant Georgas gained 400 yards and scored five touchdowns as a sophomore last season. Tight end/defensive end Jacob Vroman should provide solid two-way play coming off a junior campaign that included 10 catches for 250 yards on offense with 45 tackles, five sacks, and an interception on defense. The Trojans also return varsity veterans Baker Glomb (55 tackles last season), Nathan Florey (25 tackles), and Connor Crawley (35 tackles). With the graduation loss of all-state quarterback Owen Lansu (Minnesota), the Trojans will look for offensive line leadership from tackles Tyler Engstler, Kasch Kuzellis, guard Ryan Larson, and center Reid Adelman, to set the tone for the run game. Downers Grove North, which advanced to the Class 7A semifinals a year ago, kicks off its season against Morgan Park on Aug. 21. The Trojans open WSC Silver play at Hinsdale Central on Sept. 4.

Mustangs outlook: Despite yielding the WSC Gold title to Addison Trail, the Mustangs shook off an 0-3 start and reached the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. With an explosive offense, guided by quarterback James Sobkowiak, tailback Forrest Bates, receiver Nathan Thurston, and tight end Sean West, and an aggressive defense built to pressure opponents, the Mustangs hope they have the pieces to make a strong run this season. Sobkowiak combines a strong arm, high football IQ, and an excellent understanding of the offense. An elite dual-sport athlete being recruited at the Division I level in both football and baseball, Sobkowiak was voted the program’s first junior captain for 2026. Thurston, who started the final six games last season, should be a favorite target. Gavin Guziec, Patrick Laverty (moving from guard to tackle), and Liubomyr Leskiv anchor an experienced offensive line. On defense, the Mustangs feature linemen Jacob Fanizzo, Laverty, Leskiv, linebackers Nicholas Majchrowicz and Daniel Klaeren, and defensive backs Vincent Junkas, Luke Potter, Antonio Evans, and Peyton Dickenscheidt.
Coach’s quote: “We enter the season with a chip on our shoulder and bigger goals — reclaim the conference championship and earn a home playoff game,” Molinari said.
Fenton

Bison outlook: Following their first playoff berth since 2013 in 2024, the Bison slipped to a 3-6 mark a year ago. Fenton must find a way to replace a pair of offensive standouts who graduated from a year ago in tailback Omar Diaz and quarterback Ivan Medrano. The Bison kick off their season against Maine East on Aug. 21, and will host defending conference champion Glenbard East in their UEC East debut on Sept. 4.

Rams outlook: The Rams, who have qualified for postseason play seven consecutive years, look to reload after losing several key starters to graduation, including veteran quarterback Michael Nee (South Dakota) and defensive end Sam Walton (Northern Michigan). Sophomore Carter Pohlman, who was elevated to varsity backup as a freshman, takes over at quarterback. He will be flanked by wide receivers Malachi Miller, Mason Wright, and running back Montii Perry. Seniors Evan Reichert, Jason Breitenstein and Logan Palmeri return to anchor the offensive line. Glenbard East, the two-time defending Upstate Eight East champion, owns a 12-0 mark since the UEC divisional split in 2024.

Panthers outlook: The Panthers rebounded in a big way last season, turning a 2-7 record from 2024 into an 8-4 mark and Class 7A state quarterfinal appearance in 2025. However, they lost key players like tailback Donato Gatses, quarterback Kyle Melody, wide receiver Zechariah Morris, fullback/linebacker Lucas Kramer, and linebacker/tight end Tyler Hvorcik to graduation, as well as head coach Ryan Wilkens, who stepped down after recording a 131-91 mark for 21 seasons. Justin Kerwin, who played football for the Panthers and served as Wilkens’ sophomore coach since 2017, takes over as head coach this season. He inherits a group that figures to be led by two-way standout Angelo Gatses, lineman John Kramaric, and linebacker/fullback Zach Hvorcik. Glenbard North kicks off its season in Wisconsin against Brookfield East on Aug. 21. The Panthers’ DuKane Conference opener is against defending champion Batavia on Sept. 4.
Glenbard South

Raiders outlook: Quarterback Tommy Bauman, a three-year starter, passed for 1,106 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior. He will be joined by third-year varsity starter Anthony Baldauf, who had 25 catches for 357 yards and three TDs. Baldauf is being recruited by Ivy League, Patriot League, and Pioneer League colleges. Three-year starter Elijah Donahue, who rushed for 1,321 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2025, is being recruited by several MAC schools, Missouri Valley schools, and Kansas State. Kejuan Davis, a two-year starter, finished with 16 catches for 247 yards as a junior. Adam Lilly and Gianni Defeo figure to anchor the offensive line. Defensively, linebackers Alan Pikul and Tucker Caragher return along with veteran defensive backs Jack Hiller, and Elijah Donahue. KJ Johnson anchors a defensive line that looks for a boost from newcomers Jerez Paulette, Micah Foster, Uel Tchapda, and Jovanni Mitchell. The expectation for the Raiders is to contend for a conference championship. Defensively, Crissey feels his group includes tenacious and high-energy players. The Raiders are looking for their 15th consecutive postseason appearance — 11th straight under the direction of Crissey.
Coach’s quote: “Having three-year starters at skill positions on offense is great, especially when one of them is our quarterback,” Crissey said. “Tommy Bauman really developed into a field general last season. We will be putting a lot of stock in him.”
Glenbard West

Hilltoppers outlook: The offense returns an assortment of veteran starters, including senior quarterback AJ Rayford, who has multiple Division II offers, and Northwestern-commit Brady Johnson, who will be backed by junior tight end Pat Tagle. Longtime coach Hetlet feels Rayford is the best quarterback his program has had in 20 years and will be one of the top signal-callers in the state this season. Northwestern-bound Josiah Wallace anchors an offensive line supported by junior tackle Ryder Stroup, who has received a Division I offer from Western Illinois. Hetlet expects Johnson and Stroup will be major impact players on both sides of the ball. Senior tailback Bryce Ellens is a Minnesota-Duluth commit, while Amari Harris is a big, physical runner that will allow the team to pound the ball behind a big offensive line. Jaylen McMiller, who should anchor the secondary, has received college offers from Western Michigan, Lindenwood, and Western Illinois. Glenbard West will be aiming for its 14th West Suburban Silver championship in the last 18 years. Hetlet, who owns a 182-38 mark at Glenbard West, calls the WSC Silver the top public school conference in the state.
Coach’s quote: “We return a lot of experience and size on offense — it should be an explosive and physical group,” Hetlet said. “Defensively, we are young with just five starters back but have good team speed at skilled positions and a strong defensive line.”
Hinsdale Central

Red Devils outlook: Defensive lineman/tight end Tommie Riordan, who as a junior last season recorded 46 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and two sacks, is an Iowa commit. He will be joined on the defensive line by senior John Breton, who collected 28 tackles, including three sacks. The defensive backfield is headed by senior Owen Sunderson, who had 63 tackles and an interception, and classmate Jupiter Pohlenz, who had 22 tackles and an interception. Sunderson, Riordan, and wide receiver James Skokna are three-year starters expected to make a big impact again. Skokna had 53 receptions for 769 yards and six touchdowns, while adding 480 return yards with a TD last year. Hinsdale Central was one of five conference playoff qualifiers a year ago.
Coach’s quote: “We have a young and inexperienced group but one that is hungry,” Griffin said. “This will be the first time we have a different starting quarterback since Week 7 in 2022.”
Hinsdale South

Hornets outlook: Looking to reach postseason play for the first time since 2018, the Hornets will try to turn around their fate in close games, as they dropped a 21-19 decision to Leyden, and suffered a 30-27 loss to Downers Grove South last season. Hinsdale South will build its offense around a huge offensive line that includes seniors Daniel Orozco, David Gaibu, Jayden Rozell-Balla, and Jmar Pittman. Hinsdale South kicks off its season at Wauconda on Aug. 21, and opens the WSC Gold slate against Proviso East on Sept. 4.
IC Catholic Prep

Knights outlook: A year ago, the Knights bounced back from a 4-5 finish in 2024 to go 8-4 and advance to the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Two-way standout Grant Bowen, who holds 35 Division I offers, including Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, and Texas, had 34 receptions for 731 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense and 55 solo tackles, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, and six tackles for loss on defense. He will be joined by Northern Illinois-bound lineman Josh Shaw, Yale commit Anthony Carroccio, Stanford wrestling commit Anthony Sebastian, junior Will Schmidt, who holds an offer from Yale, and sophomore Dionel Sallis, who holds offers from Iowa and Nebraska. Senior quarterback Nate Lang passed for 2,249 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushed for 548 yards and a pair touchdowns. Schmidt had 29 receptions for 510 yards and six touchdowns with 37 solo tackles.
Coach’s quote: “Opening up with Nazareth and playing a Catholic League schedule gives us the opportunity to compete against the best,” Krefft said. “As a team, we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Lancers outlook: The Lancers are looking to rebound in the rugged DuKane Conference, thanks in part to a junior class that compiled an 8-1 record at the sophomore level last season. That junior class features lineman Charlie Booker, who recently received a Division I offer from Kansas State. Kirkpatrick feels junior Ian Witt is an athletic player with leadership traits for the safety position, and expects an immediate impact from junior kick returner TJ Ogunribido. Senior Tay’Sean Smith, a dual-threat quarterback, took over the starting job toward the end of last year and made immediate contributions. Senior linebacker Kosta Zepeda will provide leadership. The senior class returns plenty of experience. The Lancers, looking for their first postseason berth since 2017, kick off their season at Plainfield North on Aug. 21.

Montini returns 9 offensive starters from last year’s 14-0 squad, headlined by senior quarterback Izzy Abrams, a Miami of Florida commit who passed for 4,072 yards and 40 touchdowns while gaining 404 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns as a junior last season. Illinois commit Gavin Ericson anchors an offensive line that includes Hunter Mancione, Michael Lombardo, and Andrew Ayala. Returning receivers Damacio Ortegon, Luca Florio, Johnny Neustadt, and newcomers Daniel Sago and St. Rita transfer Donovan Evans combine to form one of the most talented groups in Montini school history. Defensively, the Broncos allowed an average of 16 points per game last season.

Redhawks outlook: With 13 of 22 starters returning, Ulreich expects key contributions from the returning starters and feels several newcomers can step in and become game changers. After competing in the Southwest Valley Blue the past few seasons, Naperville Central returns to the six-team DuPage Valley Conference this season. Naperville Central returns its leading rusher (Landon Nelson) and leading receiver (Mark Williams), along with speedster Kyle Clark, the school’s record holder in the 400-meter dash, and Jackson Loth, who will shift from quarterback to fullback. The defense figures to be anchored by three-year varsity starter Jaxon Pytlak and junior defensive back Eron Kennedy, the team’s defensive MVP as a sophomore. Kennedy has received offers from Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Ulreich likes his team’s dynamic speed at wide receiver, experience at the inside linebacker position, and feels senior quarterback Simon Hayes is ready to lead. The Redhawks kick off their season on Aug. 21 in one of the state’s oldest rivalries against Wheaton Warrenville South in Wheaton.

Huskies outlook: Naperville North welcomes its return to DuPage Valley Conference play, but also faces a grueling nonconference slate that includes its season opener at New Trier on Aug. 21, followed by games against Libertyville and Barrington. Defensively, the Huskies return 10 starters but must replace their best defensive lineman and Red Grange Player of the Year — Gabe Hill, now at Indiana. On offense, the Huskies return five starters, including quarterback Dante Colasante, wide receiver Jack Zitko, and tight end Aiden Trasatt, who has college offers from Army and Cornell. However, they replace most of their rushing yards from a year ago with a stable of young running backs.

This season, the Wildcats return to the DVC, where they captured titles in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Tailback Tivias Caldwell, who had 136 carries for 918 yards and 9 touchdowns, has an offer from Bemidji State. Offensive lineman Frankie McMillen, who tore his ACL in week three last year, has offers from Southeast Missouri State and Western Illinois. Evan Kolinski received a 4.5-star kicker rating and 4-star punter rating from Kohl’s National Kicking Camp. Defensive back Javonte Williams, who recorded 50 tackles and four interceptions as a sophomore last year, has offers from Northern Illinois, Marshall, Pitt, and Miami of Ohio.

This marks the first year since 2020 that former coach Jim Johanik will not be leading the Warriors, as longtime assistant Justin Swider, the school’s varsity baseball coach, takes over. Logan Oros, a two-way standout at linebacker and H-back, is a Western Illinois commit, while seniors Tommy Sommer, Hudsen Hall, and junior Kaden Larsen, were key contributors for Wheaton Academy’s state championship lacrosse team last year.

Falcons outlook: Coming off two disappointing seasons, including last year’s injury-riddled campaign, the Falcons look to regroup. A lot of juniors gained varsity experience after being thrust into starting spots last season. Quarterback Burke Neibch, who took over the starting spot in week three following an injury, completed 91 of 160 passes for 1,022 yards and eight touchdowns. Offensive lineman Kevin Petruczenko is committed to play at the University of St. Thomas, while Adam Schilling is a potential scholarship athlete. Defensively, the backfield includes veterans Jay Doherty (18 tackles, two interceptions), Johnny Clayton (33 tackles, three interceptions), and Jack Clark (42 tackles). The biggest concern is depth on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Wardynski expects Batavia and Geneva to field strong senior classes, while Wheaton Warrenville South and Lake Park possess talented junior classes.

Norris has high hopes for senior tight end Jacob Bellows, senior two-way player Clark Jensen, defensive back Eric Hecker, returning starter/offensive lineman Owen Connelly, and junior defensive lineman Cole Elste. Connelly, who started every game at guard in 2025 for one of the best rushing teams in the state, figures to anchor the offensive line. Norris expects big things from quarterback AJ Rogers, a three-sport athlete who possesses a strong arm, wide receiver Steven Harvey, a tall and athletic playmaker, and tight end Johnny Gillen, a big target with good hands. Zach Turner, a state qualifier in the discus and shot put as a sophomore, should provide quickness and disruptiveness on the defensive interior.

Warriors outlook: Junior offensive/defensive lineman Liam Pagan, a two-way standout on the Warriors’ interior line, is drawing interest from multiple Power 4 schools. Willowbrook also returns receivers JJ Miulli and Josiah Marlowe, and linemen Brian Dell, Austin Necker, and Nathan Epple. Defensively, linebackers Baron Bridgford, Dionel Rocha, and defensive backs Miulli and Marlowe figure to lead the unit. Niko Vourlos, Carter Holland, Jax Dyers, and Nate Jerkovic are battling for the starting quarterback spot. Willowbrook has qualified for postseason play nine times in the last 10 years.

Dukes outlook: The Dukes return eight players who started multiple games on defense, including their top three tacklers. They figure to lean on that experience to try and make another deep playoff run. Owen Roberts, a Purdue commit, will lead the experienced defensive unit. On offense, senior quarterback Zack Assad started the final three games last season in place of injured starter Dom Alfano. That experience should bolster an offense that brings back two wide receivers (Anthony Massel, Chris Winton) and a pair of offensive linemen (Danny Farmer, Brayden Byford). York’s list of summer activities included participating in a June 7-on-7 tournament at Naperville North, an away practice with Wheaton Warrenville South, and home practices with IC Catholic Prep, Naperville Central, and St. Patrick last month. York is looking to make the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.
