Sugar Grove man gets probation for leaving scene of 2024 crash that killed pedestrian

A Sugar Grove man has been sentenced to three years of probation for leaving the scene of a 2024 crash that killed a woman who was walking her dogs.

Marc Wiskur was also ordered not to consume intoxicating substances and will be subjected to substance testing, according to Kane County court records.

Wiskur pleaded guilty in May to leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a Class 1 felony. He was sentenced Aug. 6.

He could have been sentenced to 4 to 15 years in prison.

Around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 12, 2024, Wiskur hit 69-year-old Elaine Zielke in the 1900 block of Fay’s Lane.

Two 911 callers reported a woman had been hit by a vehicle. One of the calls came from a man who did not identify himself, did not give his address, and gave a false telephone number. Wiskur made that call, according to a prosecutor. Another caller reported an SUV had hit the woman.

Wiskur’s son stopped at the scene and was helping Zielke’s dogs. Police later approached the teen at his house and, due to his age, asked to speak to the teen’s father.

Wiskur did not come to the door. But a grandmother looked for Wiskur in the garage. When she opened the garage door, police saw a Jeep with damage to its hood and grille parked inside. The grille was warm, and DNA from Zielke was found on the hood.

Zielke was a widow. Her four children filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Wiskur. They agreed this week to settle the lawsuit out of court, according to court records.
