State to blame for some abortion deaths

This is in response to the etter of July 30 by Denise Berry. While she partly blames the overturning of Roe vs. Wade as part of an increase in the injuries and even death of some pregnant women, she fails to point out that some states, including Illinois, are also to blame.

The passing of the Illinois Reproductive Health Care Act in 2019, allowed abortions to be performed without regulation and inspections by the Illinois Department of Health, and also allowed registered nurses and physician assistants to perform aspiration abortions — something they were not able to do previously.

This creates an unsafe situation for those women seeking to get abortions because there is no oversight or accountability of abortion providers. Indeed, some of the 649 U.S. deaths Ms. Berry cites, can likely be traced to botched abortions by unqualified providers. Reinstating Roe vs. Wade would not stop the harm to pregnant women as long as states like Illinois have open-ended laws that grant carte-blanche abortions.

The real solution is to ban abortions altogether to preserve the lives of both the mother and child.
