Driver charged in crash that killed bicyclist in Hampshire

An Aurora man has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash that killed a bicyclist last month in Hampshire.

Marcos Moreno, 61, of the 700 block of Front Street, is charged with failure to report a crash resulting in death, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and obstructing justice, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office. All the charges are felonies.

Authorities said Hampshire police were called to a reported crash at about 12:40 a.m. July 6 along Route 20, between Big Timber and Gast roads. They arrived to find Ebony Calvillo, 27, of Hampshire, who was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Prosecutors allege Moreno was driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck that struck Calvillo. He left the scene, didn’t report the crash and attempted to conceal the damaged truck by storing it in a parking lot and then having it towed to his house, prosecutors say.

In a hearing Wednesday, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Danielle Bechtold asked that Moreno be detained pretrial.

She said that after hitting Calvillo, Moreno drove to a truck stop. He eventually turned around and drove slowly past the crash scene, entering an oncoming lane to get around her and crash debris, Bechtold said. She also said that once investigators found Moreno’s vehicle, he told them that he thought he had hit a deer.

“He knew it wasn’t a deer, it was a human being,” Bechtold said.

But she also said there was no indication Moreno was driving recklessly when he hit her.

Judge Salvatore LoPiccolo ruled the charges did not qualify as detainable offenses, so Moreno was to be released pending trial.
