Bartlett firefighters extinguish burning tree and gas main after lightning strike

No one was injured as Bartlett Fire Protection District personnel extinguished a burning tree and natural gas main fire caused by a lightning strike Sunday night.

Firefighters were called to the scene on the 1300 block of Deerfield Lane in Bartlett at 10:37 p.m., officials said. They arrived to find heavy fire around a parkway tree in front of a house.

Fire officials determined the lightning strike had also ruptured and ignited the nearby gas main, so Nicor and ComEd were called. The fire was declared under control at 2:56 a.m., after Nicor crews had clamped the damaged line and stopped the flow of gas.

Damage was limited to the tree and surrounding vegetation, fire district officials said.
