Wisconsin woman dies after being hit by Metra train in Palatine
A Wisconsin woman died after being hit by an inbound Metra train Sunday afternoon in Palatine.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the woman as 20-year-old Lana R. Crawford of Elkhorn.
Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile said the train was slowing down as it pulled into the Palatine station for a scheduled stop at about 3:25 p.m.
Crawford was crossing at Smith and Wood streets while the lights were activated and the gates were down, Thomas-Reile said. When the train horn sounded, Crawford momentarily froze and attempted to step back, but was hit by the train.
Crawford was taken to Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where she was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m.
Service along the Union Pacific Northwest line was delayed by about 40 minutes in both directions.
The death remains under investigation by Metra police.
