One rescued, one still missing in storm sewer incident in Downers Grove

Downers Grove officials said Monday night that the search for a worker who was trapped in a stormwater sewer has become a recovery effort, not a rescue.

At 8:28 p.m., the village posted on Facebook that water conditions in the sewer made further search efforts “extremely dangerous.”

Around 12:50 p.m., workers at a sewer construction site on the 800 block of Curtiss Street, near the village hall and police station, flagged down police to say two workers had disappeared in a stormwater sewer.

Firefighters were able to rescue one worker, approximately 200 feet away from the point of entry. He is in good condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, according to the post.

The evening post said rescuers will resume search efforts when water conditions in the sewer improve.
