Judge grants state’s petition to detain suspect in fatal Round Lake Beach shooting

A man facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend Sunday night in Round Lake Beach was ordered held in custody pending a future court date.

At a detention hearing Thursday, prosecutors argued Juan U. Lopez-Aguayo, 26, of Round Lake Beach, would pose a threat to the safety of others.

According to prosecutors, Lopez-Aguayo went to her home on the 1200 block of Sunnyside Court and shot her new partner, Kevin Rodriguez-Ruiz, 31, of Round Lake Park.

Rodriguez-Ruiz was found shot in the street and pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.

Rodriguez-Ruiz and the woman were in a vehicle when Lopez-Aguayo approached, prosecutors have said.

Prosecutors said Rodriguez-Ruiz was shot after he got out of the car and that Lopez-Aguayo also tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend. The shooting was captured on video and prosecutors argued no conditions of release could protect the surviving witness or community.

They argued Lopez-Aguayo, who also is charged with attempted first-degree murder, posed a flight risk because he disposed of the firearm and fled Lake County after the shooting.

He was captured in southern Illinois reportedly attempting to flee to Texas, prosecutors said.

A judge granted the state’s petition to detain. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13.
