Man accused of 2025 Carpentersville crash charged with reckless homicide

A South Elgin man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a 2025 crash that killed a 70-year-old woman.

Matthew Hinde, 39, of the 600 block of Glenwood Drive, also is charged with misdemeanor speeding 26 to 34 mph over the limit, and petty charges of driving too fast for conditions/failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to Kane County court records.

The crash happened Jan. 8, 2025, in Carpentersville. Hinde initially received traffic citations. The felony and misdemeanor charges were filed June 16. Hinde turned himself in to police Monday morning.

The crash happened around 4:48 p.m. at Randall and Binnie roads. Maria Drinkwater of Huntley was driving south on Randall and tried to turn left onto Binnie. Hinde was driving north when his SUV hit her vehicle, according to reports.

At a hearing Monday afternoon, Kane County Judge Salvatore Lo Piccolo said a synopsis of a police report submitted by prosecutors indicated Hinde was driving 76 mph 1.7 seconds before the crash, and that he had been seen accelerating “at a high rate” and repeatedly changing lanes shortly before the crash.

Prosecutors sought to have Hinde detained pretrial. But LoPiccolo denied the request, saying it was not necessary because Hinde is no longer driving.

Hinde’s attorney, Arben Kurtivic, said Hinde stopped driving in October 2025, that his doctor has recommended he not drive, and that the Illinois Secretary of State’s office had medically disqualified him from having a license due to a neurological condition. He provided receipts showing Hinde takes Uber to and from his job.

Kurtivic also said Hinde submitted to drug and alcohol testing immediately following the crash, and there was no evidence of intoxication.

Hinde’s next court date is Aug. 27.
