‘New York’ play examines personal stories from 9/11 at Playhouse 38

Tickets are now on sale for the adult production of “New York,” running July 31-Aug. 2 and Aug. 7-9 at Playhouse 38, Geneva Park District’s community theater.

David Rimmer, a Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright for “Album,” originally wrote “New York” to raise funds for volunteer psychiatrists dedicated to helping the overwhelming number of patients psychologically affected by 9/11.

Depicting the reactions of 15 individuals to the events of that day, “New York” features a wide array of sympathetic characters, all speaking to a central psychiatrist. “New York” will be directed by Jay Fontanetta.

“Given that this year is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, I felt that this well-written piece deserves a production because it serves as a reminder of how Americans can unite under the most harrowing of situations,” Fontanetta said. “Although it is a relatively large cast, the scenes are small and intimate, allowing for in-depth character study and authentic acting choices.”

This production features Renata Allelujka, Courtney Beresheim, Arielle Benjamin, Adam Boczar, Mike Boyna, Jennifer Carroll, Lara Crowley, Kayla Crispino, Alex Cirpinski, Lauren Fontanetta, Ann Keen, Ben Mosshamer, Reilly Newkirk, Danny Parrott, and Anthony West.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, July 31 to Aug. 9, at Playhouse 38, 321 Stevens St., Suite P. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day-of. Concessions will be available for purchase, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, popcorn and candy.

Individuals are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at GenevaParks.org/Playhouse or in person at Sunset Community Center or Stephen Persinger Recreation Center. Information about group sales discounts is available by calling the park district at (630) 232- 4542.
