Aurora man charged with DUI, reckless homicide after fatal crash Saturday night
An Aurora man has been charged with aggravated DUI causing death and reckless homicide following a fatal two-vehicle crash that killed a 23-year-old woman over the weekend.
The crash happened at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Church and Butterfield roads in Aurora, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Aurora Police Department, a preliminary investigation indicates that a woman driving a Hyundai sedan was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Butterfield to southbound Church when her car was struck by an eastbound Toyota pickup truck driven by Irven Pinedo, 30, of Aurora.
The woman was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Pinedo was transported to another hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition.
Authorities say Pinedo was arrested and charged with a dozen felonies, including five counts each of aggravated driving under the influence causing death and aggravated driving under the influence — third violation. He also faces one count each of reckless homicide and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
In addition, Pinedo was issued misdemeanor and petty offense citations for three counts of driving under the influence and one count of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Monday to determine the cause and manner of the woman’s death. The results have not yet been released.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
