2.9-magnitude earthquake beneath Lake Michigan rattles suburbs
A 2.9-magnitude earthquake about three miles below Lake Michigan and about 10 miles off shore from Highland Park rattled suburbs in Eastern Cook and Lake counties Wednesday afternoon.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 2:38 p.m., according to its tracking website.
It was felt as far west as Elgin and as far north as the Wisconsin border, according to the USGS.
No damage or injuries were reported.
It is the second earthquake reported in Illinois in the past 30 days, according to the USGS. A 3.5-magnitude quake was reported June 29 near downstate West Salem.
