Aurora Fire Department responds to 2 fires on July 4
The Aurora Fire Department responded to two consecutive structure fires on Independence Day: A siding fire involving two neighboring homes and a garage fire, officials said. No civilians or first responders reported injuries at either incident.
Crews responded to reports of a house fire at 6:23 p.m. and discovered burning siding on a single-family home on the 1600 block of Cumberland Drive, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and prevent it from spreading farther into the home or the neighboring home.
While both residences were deemed habitable, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Later, at 11:25 p.m., crews responded to reports of a garage fire at a two-story single-family home on the 2200 block of Highfield Lane. They arrived to find the attached garage engulfed in flame, with fire extending into the residence and threatening nearby homes.
Crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and rear kitchen area and extinguish it before further spread.
Five adults and one child were displaced after the home was deemed uninhabitable and are temporarily staying with family. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“Our crews responded rapidly to both incidents, preventing more significant damage and ensuring everyone made it out safely,” said Aurora Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel. “As summer activities continue, we encourage residents to use caution around grills, fire pits, fireworks, and other ignition sources to help prevent fires before they start.”
