IDOT warns of buckling pavement amid heat wave

Amid a heat wave expected to keep high temperatures in the mid 90s through at least Thursday, the Illinois Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be on the lookout for pavement failures on roads and stay alert for crews making emergency repairs. ​

Pavement failures, buckling and blowouts occur with little warning during periods of prolonged heat and humidity, resulting in uneven driving surfaces, IDOT says.

“While it’s impossible to predict where or when these failures might occur, maintenance personnel will be monitoring road conditions and on standby to make repairs as quickly as possible when they are observed and reported,” IDOT said in a news release.

Pavement failures can be reported to IDOT by calling (800) 452-4368 or by reaching out to law enforcement.

Drivers should anticipate slowing traffic and move over for workers and other emergency personnel when repairs are being made.

IDOT also suggests drivers traveling during extreme heat to pack extra water.
