Teen convicted of murder in shooting in Carpentersville
A Carpentersville teenager was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for the shooting death of another teen.
Jimmy Medina, 19, of the 200 block of Ensenada Drive, was also convicted of attempted murder for injuring two other people.
Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler found Medina guilty under the concept of accountability, even though he may not have been the one who shot the gun, he said. Under Illinois law, a person can be convicted if they solicit, aid, abet, agree or attempt to aid another person in the planning or commission of a crime.
Medina chose to have his case decided by a judge rather than a jury.
On Oct. 25, 2023, Medina was the front-seat passenger in a Jeep driven by his cousin, Alan Medina.
Alan Medina is also charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Shots were fired from the Jeep at a vehicle containing five people near the 0-100 block of Robin Road in Carpentersville.
Anthony Aragon died of a gunshot to his head.
Tegeler said there had been a dispute, that some people then planned to fight, and that the Medinas were asked to come there as reinforcements.
He said Medina had sent messages to another person requesting a gun, and about how he was going to shoot a particular person first.
Medina is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 26.
Alan Medina is still awaiting trial. His next court date is July 22.
