Heat advisory in place for area through Wednesday

A heat advisory is in place for the Chicago area through Wednesday as dangerous heat and humidity levels will push daytime heat indexes into the triple digits.

High temperatures are expected to linger in the mid-90s throughout the week, but create heat index values as high as 110 in some suburbs because of moist, thick air sticking around, forecasters predict.

Storms Thursday could bring some relief, but high temperatures Thursday and Friday are both expected to remain in the 90s, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service office in Romeoville.

Evening lows are only expected to drop into the 70s for most of the week as well.

Extra care for pets

Veterinarians are also warning pet owners to take additional precautions with their animals during the heat wave.

First and foremost, never leave dogs alone in parked vehicles, vets said. Even leaving windows cracked doesn’t provide enough protection.

If your pets are exhibiting signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, heavy drooling, weakness, lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea, they need to be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Pavement and other surfaces can burn paws, so be careful walking your dogs. Vets recommend early morning or late evening walks when temperatures have cooled and the sun isn’t as powerful.
