Loud muffler noise disrupts neighborhoods

As a long-time resident of Mount Prospect, I have watched our streets transform from relatively quiet to progressively noisier due to a profound increase in vehicles with modified mufflers. This is no longer just a local problem, but has become a rampant trend across neighborhoods throughout the Chicago area.

Modified mufflers are aftermarket exhaust systems designed to replace a vehicle’s original equipment with a much louder, more aggressive alternative. These modifications have numerous negative impacts on everyone around them.

One of the most significant consequences involves public health. Recent studies suggest that chronic, high-volume traffic noise contributes to anxiety, sleep loss, hypertension, stress, heart disease, and even shortened lifespans.

Furthermore, modified mufflers are illegal in Illinois. State law requires every motor vehicle driven on public highways or streets to be equipped with an adequate, functioning muffler. The law explicitly states that no person shall modify a vehicle’s exhaust system in a manner that amplifies or increases its noise.

Unfortunately, the individuals driving these vehicles show a total disregard for the law and for the residents in the neighborhoods they pass through. Some may incorrectly believe they have an inherent right to a loud vehicle, while others simply find the disruption enjoyable.

These drivers will not change their behavior until it impacts their wallets. That is where law enforcement must step in. I encourage residents who care about your community’s quality of life to urge local police to vigorously enforce both village ordinances and state noise laws.
