Search ends without result for man who jumped into Fox River in Elgin while fleeing police
Though the investigation continues, the Elgin Fire Department and assisting agencies Saturday concluded their two-day search without result for a man who jumped into the Fox River Friday morning while fleeing police officers.
Officials said an update on the ongoing investigation will be provided within the next few days.
According to the Elgin Police Department, officers responded at 10:52 a.m. Friday to the area of Highland Avenue and State Street for the report of a male subject interfering with railroad operations.
After police officers made contact with the man, he fled on foot and ran into the Fox River, authorities said. According to police, the officers say they observed that the man had a “large knife.”
Boats and divers from the Elgin Fire Department responded to the area and deployed water rescue equipment to try to get the man safely back to land.
While those efforts were underway, the man went under the surface of the water, officials said.
A mutual aid box alarm was activated, and fire departments from Algonquin, Bartlett, Buffalo Grove, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg, South Elgin, and St. Charles responded to assist at the scene.
