Naperville man faces Medicare fraud charges
A Naperville man is facing Medicare fraud charges stemming from a federal investigation into COVID-19 test kit sales that prosecutors say were never made.
Amirali Bhimani, 42, is charged with the healthcare fraud in connection with what prosecutors said was a scheme “to defraud Medicare through the submission of fraudulent claims for over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits that were never requested or provided.”
According to court records, Bhimani caused laboratories to submit claims worth $342 million to Medicare.
Prosecutors said Bhimani used artificial intelligence to create fake recordings of phone calls where Medicare beneficiaries agreed to receive the test kits.
The arrest was part of nationwide health care fraud crackdown that resulted in charges against dozens of doctors and scores of other licensed medical professionals.
