Lake Zurich police car struck during traffic stop

A Lake Zurich police officer escaped injuries over the weekend when a squad car was struck by a passing vehicle along Rand Road near Cuba Road., authorities said.

An officer was conducting a traffic stop at about 9:20 p.m. Friday in the right lane with emergency lights activated when a 2022 Kia traveling southbound failed to yield to the emergency vehicle and struck its right side, police said.

The officer was outside the car at the time, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The Kia’s driver, Robert Kruck of Antioch, is charged with driving under the influence of drugs, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle — also known as “Scott’s Law” — police said.

This is the second time a Lake Zurich squad car on a traffic stop has been struck by an impaired driver in the past six months, officials said.

The Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and if possible change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated.
