Community pride through preservation: How the Gifford Park Association protects Elgin’s architectural heritage

Almost every homeowner takes a certain degree of pride in their own house. But when you see an entire neighborhood rally together to care for their shared history, something much larger is happening.

That collective pride is the foundation of community, and it is exactly what the Gifford Park Association (GPA) has been building in Elgin since 1979.

What began as a dedicated group of neighbors committed to revitalizing Elgin’s historic neighborhoods has evolved into one of the city’s most influential community organizations.

Today, the GPA serves as a vital resource for old-house enthusiasts and civic-minded residents alike, fostering a deep appreciation for Elgin’s unique urban fabric. Through educational outreach, hands-on rehabilitation assistance, and tireless advocacy for historic preservation, we work to ensure that Elgin’s architectural character remains a point of pride for all.

Over the years, our efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Elgin Image Awards and Mayor’s Awards, reflecting our long-standing commitment to making our neighborhoods better places to live, work, and play.

We believe that preservation is about more than just maintaining beautiful old structures. GPA actively reinvests in our neighborhood through an array of historic grant programs. These community grants assist local homeowners with architectural restoration, paint costs, and siding removal. By providing financial incentives and a supportive network of experienced neighbors, we help Elgin retain its distinct architectural legacy.

Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Elgin History Museum. These meetings are always open to the public, offering a welcoming space for anyone interested in local history, architectural stewardship, or simply meeting their neighbors.

In September, we host our signature event: the annual Historic Elgin House Tour. Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., this beloved tradition invites the public inside the doors of some of Elgin’s finest, most historically significant homes.

The Tour celebrates a wide variety of properties, from homes that have always been lovingly cared for to those that stand as prime examples of good design, skillful tradeswork, and thoughtful ownership. By showcasing these spaces, the event inspires people to repair, maintain, and restore older properties, demonstrating firsthand how preservation, rehabilitation, and good stewardship help create highly desirable neighborhoods.

During the event, knowledgeable docents guide visitors through stunning architectural details, sharing the unique stories of the craftspeople who built our city, the families who lived there, and the modern homeowners dedicated to preserving Elgin’s history.

Tickets for the House Tour will go on sale in July at historicelginhousetour.com.

Whether you own a historic home, are looking to move into the area, or simply love local history, the Gifford Park Association welcomes you. Together, we are preserving Elgin's past to build a stronger, more connected future.
