Side Street Studio Arts to transform Elgin’s cultural landscape with new riverfront home

In downtown Elgin, Side Street Studio Arts has spent more than 13 years creating opportunities for artists, performers, students, and audiences throughout the Fox Valley.

Founded in 2013, the nonprofit arts organization was built on a simple belief: art matters. Since then, Side Street has grown into one of the region's most active cultural organizations, providing opportunities for people of all ages to create, learn, perform, and connect through the arts.

Side Street has become a gathering space where creativity, collaboration, and community come together. Through visual art exhibitions, live performances, arts education programs, artist development initiatives, and public events, the organization works to ensure that everyone has a place in the creative conversation.

Over the years, Side Street has reinvested more than $1.5 million into the local economy through artist payments, staffing, educational programming, and creative opportunities, helping strengthen Elgin's reputation as a vibrant arts destination.

Today, Side Street is entering one of the most exciting chapters in its history: the development of its permanent home at 62 S. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin.

Supported by the Reva & David Logan Foundation, the project will transform a historic riverfront building into what will become one of the largest and most accessible arts and culture hubs in the Fox Valley.

The new facility will allow Side Street's exhibition, performance, education, and advocacy programs to operate under one roof while quadrupling the organization's space and expanding opportunities for artists and community members alike.

The investment in Elgin's creative infrastructure is about more than one organization. A thriving arts scene helps attract visitors, support local businesses, create opportunities for young people, and foster the sense of identity that makes communities stronger.

As Elgin continues to emerge as a regional arts destination, organizations like Side Street help ensure that creativity remains an essential part of the city’s future.

While Side Street looks toward the future, its calendar remains packed with events that celebrate creativity in all its forms. One of the most anticipated is AREA 22: Arts, Crafts & Oddities Fair, returning to downtown Elgin on Aug. 8.

Now in its third year, AREA 22 has quickly become a favorite summer tradition for artists and visitors alike. More than a typical arts and crafts fair, AREA 22 embraces the unusual, the imaginative, and the unexpected.

The event from 1-7 p.m. features artists, makers, collectors, and creators whose work ranges from traditional fine art to handcrafted oddities and one-of-a-kind curiosities. With free admission, live demonstrations, food vendors, and a welcoming atmosphere, AREA 22 reflects Side Street's belief that creativity thrives when there is room for experimentation and individuality.

Another cornerstone of Side Street's programming is the Elgin Fringe Festival, one of the region's most distinctive performing arts events.

This year's festival runs Sept. 23-27, with a Fringe visual art exhibition opening on Sept. 4 and pop-up performances and special events taking place throughout the month.

Produced by Side Street Studio Arts, the festival brings together artists from across the country to present theater, comedy, dance, music, film, visual art, and performances that often defy traditional categories.

As a member of the United States Association of Fringe Festivals and World Fringe, the festival operates under a lottery-based, uncurated, and uncensored model that gives artists the freedom to take risks and audiences the opportunity to experience something entirely new.

Most importantly, 100% of ticket and art sales are returned directly to participating artists. The festival has become a signature cultural event for Elgin, drawing visitors downtown while encouraging artistic experimentation and innovation.

As Side Street Studio Arts continues to grow, its mission remains unchanged: to advance engagement in the arts by providing inclusive access to exhibition, performance, education, and advocacy resources.

Whether through a gallery opening, a theater performance, a community workshop, AREA 22, the Elgin Fringe Festival, or the future home at 62 S. Grove Ave., Side Street is committed to creating opportunities for artists and enriching the cultural life of the Fox Valley.
