A missing requirement
It was good news to know that Illinois has upcoming legislation for regulations for e-bikes and e-scooters. But the legislation leaves out a very important regulation — helmets. As a triple corneal transplant recipient, I have volunteered for the Gift of Hope in Itasca (which coordinates organ and tissue donation in most of Illinois) for over 20 years. I have seen too many stories about e-bike, e-scooter and motorcycle riders who have become organ donors because they are not wearing helmets.
Since the nicer weather is now with us, I also see too many people riding e-bikes and e-scooters in my neighborhood at high speeds on the street without helmets. I am fearful that these riders are potential organ donors.
I am hoping that the awareness of the dangers starts with parents helping their children to follow the regulations and requiring them to wear helmets, and that wearing helmets continues with adults doing the same.
