Aurora Scouts honor Flag Day in eighth annual community fundraiser

Celebrating national Flag Day on Sunday, Blackhawk Scout Troop 11 based at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora posted U.S. flags on Aurora and North Aurora lawns.

The eighth annual four-date fundraiser, launched on Memorial Day, continues on July 4 and Labor Day.

For a donation, uniformed Scouts respectfully post flags with a salute in subscribers' yards in the morning. In the evening, Scouts retrieve the flags.

Proceeds cover costs of maintaining troop equipment, summer camps and recognition for scouts’ accomplishments.

Subscribers can have a flag posted at the Aurora police station to honor those who served, first responders, or a loved one.

About Troop 11

Founded in 1916 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, Scouting America's Troop 11 is chartered by Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84. Since its founding, Troop 11 has guided over 200 young men on their journey to earn the rank of Eagle.

Troop 11 is a “boy-led” troop, focusing on developing leadership by giving scouts responsibility for managing their activities. The scouting program is designed for youth from 11 to 17 years old or are at least 10 years old and have completed the fifth grade or have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award.

Scouts experience a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster to achieve the objectives of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness. Troop 11 meets at Wesley UMC, 14 N. May St., Aurora, on Mondays at 7 p.m.
