Final vote on Des Plaines church expansion plan delayed

A Des Plaines church congregation will have to wait at least three more weeks to learn if the city council will approve its expansion plan.

A vote that had been scheduled for Monday night was delayed until July 6 because of unspecified changes to the Chicago Mar Thoma Church’s proposal.

Mayor Andrew Goczkowski announced the vote was deferred before he and the council moved onto other business. There was no further discussion of the plan, which calls for a second building to be added to the campus at 240 Potter Road.

The new building would house a gymnasium, classrooms, a kitchen and an office.

The parking lot on the roughly 3-acre property would be expanded, too, and landscaping changes have been proposed.

The city council tentatively approved the proposal June 1, as well as a conditional permit that allows such a building in a neighborhood zoned for residential use.

Nearby residents have publicly expressed concerns about noise, the environment, traffic and other issues.

The July 6 council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at city hall, 1420 Miner St. It’ll be open to the public and livestreamed at desplainesil.gov.
