Huntley senior residents pilot new program with international cycling initiative

International nonprofit Cycling Without Age officially launched its program in Huntley with an opening day ride featuring residents of Alden Estates of Huntley.

Resident Jean Ellen Moreau and her daughter, Susan Folier, were the first to ride, enjoying scenic trail views on the back of a trishaw. They were followed by fellow residents Amelia La Spisa and Boris Simkhin, as more than 20 residents signed up to participate in the inaugural rides.

Cycling Without Age, which has more than 3,000 chapters worldwide, provides free recreational rides for seniors to help reduce isolation and promote connection. McHenry County CWA co-founder Sharon Smith identified Huntley as a community with a strong need for the program.

“I had been trying to bring this program to Huntley for some time,” Smith said. “There are so many seniors here who can benefit, so I was excited to get things up and running finally.”

Alden Estates of Huntley Activity Director Delight Davenport partnered with Smith to coordinate the program’s launch and integrate it into resident activities.

“I’m always looking for fun and unique ways to keep our residents engaged. When I learned about Cycling Without Age, I knew it would be a perfect fit, especially for the summer,” Davenport said.

Folier, who joined her mother for the first ride, encouraged others to participate following their experience.

“That was amazing, I highly recommend it. I didn’t expect to have this much fun, and I’m so glad I got to share it with my mom,” Folier said.

The program relies on trained volunteers to pilot the trishaws. Smith has already trained five volunteers from Alden Estates of Huntley, with plans to offer weekly rides every Thursday, weather permitting.

“We’re looking forward to getting residents outside each week,” Davenport added. “It’s a great way to enjoy the weather, stay active, and have fun together.”
