Des Plaines police officers getting pay raises
Des Plaines police officers will get pay raises under a new, four-year labor contract.
The deal with the officers’ union, the Des Plaines chapter of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, applies to all 79 sworn patrol officers in nonsupervisory positions, city spokesperson Brad Goodman said.
That includes officers in specialty positions.
The city council approved the agreement Monday night. There was no public discussion; the item was approved as part of the consent agenda, a section reserved for routine matters.
Officers will receive 3.5% raises this year, plus 6% bumps to bring their pay in line with market rates, Goodman said.
From there, officers will receive 3% raises in 2027, 3.5% increases in 2028 and 3% raises in 2029.
The starting salary for a new officer will increase to $86,265 this year, up from $83,347.
Additionally, specialty pay is changing from a percentage to fixed dollar amounts. That applies to evidence technicians, detectives, officers teamed with police dogs and others, documents indicate.
Extra pay for field training officers will increase, too.
Employee contributions to health insurance will increase in 2028 to 13% from 10%, documents indicate.
The labor pact reflects the professionalism of Des Plaines police officers and keeps the department competitive in a tight hiring market, Chief Dave Anderson said through a spokesperson.
“Investing in well-trained, well-paid officers helps us attract and retain top candidates, directly supporting strong public safety and service for our community,” Anderson said.
The new contract is retroactively effective Jan. 1, the start of the city’s current fiscal year. It will expire Dec. 31, 2029.
