An unfair ‘done deal’
I've been a resident of Algonquin for over 30 years. I'm 62 years old, disabled and single but fortunate enough to still live by myself. Algonquin has recently put in place a new five-year garbage contract with Groot Industries. This new contract eliminates the current sticker system. I have little garbage and was paying roughly $3.50 a month. My new cost will be $21.84 a month. I'm on a fixed income and this increase is significant to me. I'm told there was no consideration for the “disabled,” and I don't meet the senior requirement for a reduced rate. This new contract was signed by Algonquin with no input from its residents; I was told it's a “done deal.” This new program is very unfair to “disabled,” “singles,” and “seniors” that have very little trash. Shame on Algonquin. I'm confident that there will be leadership change come next election but unfortunately, that's a ways away.
