Girls soccer: Geneva’s dream season ends in supersectional

The dream of reaching the state tournament for the Geneva Vikings for the first time since 2005 came to an abrupt end Tuesday night when Lemont beat Megan Owens' club 3-0 to capture the Kankakee supersectional.

The victory sends Lemont (23-1-1) into the Class 2A state tournament for the seventh time in program history, and first since 2018.

Next up for Lemont is Crystal Lake Central (20-2-0) this Friday in a state semifinal at 12:30 p.m. in Naperville at North Central College.

The Vikings (15-7-1) have been on a memorable postseason ride, which began by winning its own regional with a 2-0 win over Plainfield East on goals from Lyla Clemons and Bridget Burke.

Following its 6-0 triumph over Ottawa in their sectional semifinal at Orion High School, the Vikings used goals from Clemons and Burke to defeat Plainfield Central to earn its first sectional title since 2005.

"We endured an almost three-hour bus ride to get to (Orion) so we made sure to get ourselves ready, both mentally, and physically, and the girls did a great job of playing hard and being focused from the very first whistle of our sectional final," said Geneva coach Megan Owens.

"Like every team, we had our peaks and valleys, and sometime(s) you have to face a little adversity in order for your team to refocus, and that is what this team did with the help of a great group of seniors."
