Nine arrested, dozens cited, at Naperville downtown ‘takeover’
Naperville police announced Tuesday that they arrested nine people at what organizers called a “teen takeover” in the city’s downtown on Monday afternoon and evening.
“We’ve been very clear on our stance,” Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said in a written statement. “We want people to come to our city, patronize our businesses, and enjoy all the amenities Naperville has to offer. But if you break the law, there will be no warnings; there will be no second chances.
“We will not hesitate to make arrests and issue citations for breaking the law,” Arres added.
The gathering was announced last week on social media, including Facebook. Police then used their own Facebook page to warn people to behave themselves if they were going to attend, and that officers would be there.
Around 5 p.m., according to Naperville police, large groups began gathering, mainly along Washington Street between Chicago and Van Buren avenues.
The crowds left by about 11 p.m., according to police.
