Shimmering Summer: Chicago Botanic Garden to feature iridescent bubble art
Playful art in the sky, on land, and in the water will highlight nature through a new lens during Shimmering Summer at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.
Starting Saturday, June 6, and running through Sept. 20, visitors can engage with a trail of larger-than-life iridescent bubbles that reflect the landscape and enjoy lively family-friendly events throughout the season.
“We are excited to debut the art installation, ‘Evanescent,’ by Australian based artists Atelier Sisu for the first time in a U.S. botanic garden setting,” said Jodi Zombolo, associate vice president, visitor events and programs. “The installation emulates the ethereal quality and magic of bubbles, and our summer programming extends that playfulness for visitors of all ages.”
A series of weekend events included with admission throughout the summer features juggling performers, hula-hoop artists, bubble performances, and musical entertainment.
Opening weekend events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, will include a family-friendly DJ and “fun director” leading dancing and interactive games. Light bites and beverages, including caramel popcorn balls, cotton candy, and bubble tea, will be available for purchase. Visitors can wander among shimmering giants and hop into field games like limbo and relay races, or grab a drink from the Garden View Café pop-up, lounge on their picnic blankets, and soak up the vibes. Tram Tours are up and running for the season; get another perspective on Shimmering Summer and the garden with a narrated tour of the grounds.
Shimmering Summer is open daily during the garden’s general hours, which change seasonally. To learn more, visit chicagobotanic.org/shimmering.
