‘Why would they close?’: ALDI closes its Buffalo Grove store
ALDI announced it is closing its Buffalo Grove store Sunday.
A sign on the door said the grocery location at 1202 W. Dundee Road will shutter permanently at 5 p.m.
The sign thanked customers for their years of loyalty and support and encouraged them to visit nearby locations at 761 E. Dundee Road in Palatine and 1432 E. Rand Road in Prospect Heights.
The sign took shoppers by surprise.
“I didn’t even know they were closing,” Buffalo Grove resident Renee Dax said. “It’s always busy. Why would they close?”
Now Dax will have to decide whether to shop “all the way in Palatine.”
The announcement of the store’s closure comes as the west end of Strathmore Square is beginning to enjoy a revival with the arrival of Brunchy’s Pancakes & Cafe.
“ALDI will continue to provide customers great products at the lowest possible prices at nearly 30 stores throughout the Chicagoland area, and we remain committed to making a positive impact in every community we serve,” the company said in a statement.
The statement also suggested having groceries delivered to their door through Instacart, Uber Eats and DoorDash.
ALDI confirmed all employees have been offered a transfer to a store of their choice and that no jobs were lost.
