Stolen signs sully school’s reputation

Saint Viator High School is an exemplary fixture of Catholic Education in Arlington Heights. They offer excellence in college preparatory education and a fine choice among the educational opportunities in Arlington Heights. Quoting from their Vision Statement, “We strive to do everything well so that through us, Jesus may be adored and loved.” Commendable.

So, it is very surprising that the neighbors surrounding the school, engaging in a free speech exercise over the Memorial Day weekend by posting yard signs opposing the proposed redevelopment of the athletic fields by Saint Viator, woke to find them criminally stolen in the wee hours of the morning Memorial Day. Mine was stolen. Dozens and dozens of signs were stolen. Evidently tolerating free speech is not part of “doing everything well.”

While I do not suspect Saint Viator of sanctioning the thefts, nor do I assume students were involved, some supporter(s) decided to organize and carry out the thefts. The action reflects extremely poorly on the school and their community of supporters. Vision violated. Reputation sullied.
