Girls lacrosse: Barrington starts fast in sectional championship win in Crystal Lake
Fast start and never letting up.
That was the mantra for 48 minutes for Barrington.
The Fillies, who took a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, defeated Crystal Lake United 11-6 in the title game of the Crystal Lake sectional hosted by Crystal Lake Central Friday afternoon.
United is made up of players from Crystal Lake Central, Prairie Ridge, Cary-Grove and Crystal Lake South.
The top-seeded Fillies (21-2) advance to the Huntley supersectional to play host Huntley at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Huntley defeated Naperville North 18-10 on Friday.
"We were really ready to play," Barrington coach Addie Dieckmeyer said. “I am really proud of them. We stress the team concept and we have been prepping for this all season. Everybody has been contributing."
Harley Thalheimer scored the first three goals for the sectional champs while Gia Klauer and Chloe Nevin each found the net as the Fillies built up a 5-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
"We came out with great energy and got good shots," said Thalheimer. “We possessed the ball and had a good team concept."
Second-seeded Crystal Lake United (21-2) bounced back and scored three unanswered goals, two by Anna Starr and one by Mikayla Simonic to make the score 5-3.
Peyton Wolfe scored with only 21 seconds left in the half to give Barrington a 6-3 lead at intermission.
Nevin scored with 11:14 left in the third quarter to make the score 7-3.
Barrington, which outshot Crystal Lake 22-11, got four goals from Thalheimer, three from Nevin and two by Gia Klaar.
"We have a lot of skill on this team," said Nevin. “We use the team concept and we were ready to play today."
Wolfe and Emma Menke added one goal each for the winners.
"We are a quick team," said Dieckmeyer. “We used our ground balls and did a great job of possessing the ball."
Starr, a four-year starter, scored three goals for Crystal Lake United.
“Their possession was a clear factor," said Starr. ”We have a great team culture for success. We love each other. Barrington played a strong zone defense against us."
Simonec, Sydney Cruz, and Avery Younge added goals for Crystal Lake.
