Early morning fire guts home in South Elgin
An early Thursday morning fire in South Elgin gutted a home and caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.
Firefighters were called to the split-level, single-family home on the 100 block of Arthur Avenue just after 3:45 a.m.
Firefighters reported heavy fire in the rear of the home that had extended to the attic.
Fire officials said remodeling of the home over the years made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze, eventually causing the roof to partially collapse. The fire was finally deemed under control just after 5:30 a.m.
The home was left uninhabitable, though no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
