Garden Club of Inverness awards three scholarships
The Garden Club of Inverness met at Makray Golf Club for its annual spring luncheon on May 21. Three $3,500 scholarships were awarded to students pursuing education related to the environment and ecology.
Three outstanding students received the awards: Christopher Marzigliano, who attends Michigan Technological University; Syesha Sakhuja, who will attend University of Illinois; and Divya Saikumar, who attends Rice University. Only Syesh Sakhuia was available to be present to receive the scholarship, as the other two had already begun internships for the summer. Myra Buettner, Scholarship Committee chair, reviewed the applications received from students in High School District 211 and Barrington High School with four other Club members. Scholarships are funded through the annual Holiday Luncheon fundraiser at Medinah Country Club.
This year’s event theme “I wonder what life would be like if we weren’t so fabulous!” was hosted by Club members Joyce Axe and Kathy Rein. Both will be retiring from this role after eight years as hospitality chairs. Beautiful centerpieces were arranged by Club members and each table centerpiece also boasted a lovely red hat which one lucky guest could win. Of course, hats and gloves were encouraged!
The Club meets at the All Saints Lutheran Church at 630 South Quentin, Palatine, on the third Thursday of the month at 9:30 from August through April. Each meeting has a Club business meeting followed by a guest speaker. Everyone is welcome to attend at no cost. Check out their website at https://gardenclubofinverness.com
