Woman’s body found after apartment fire in Des Plaines

A woman was found dead following an apartment fire in Des Plaines early Friday.

The woman’s identity hasn’t been released by authorities.

The fire was reported at about 12:40 a.m. in a two-story, eight-unit apartment building on the 700 block of Fifth Court. Responding crews were told someone might be trapped in the blaze, according to a news release.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes of the initial call. They found the woman’s body in the first-floor apartment where the fire started while searching the building, authorities said.

Thirteen additional people got out safely.

The building was left uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It didn’t appear suspicious, a city spokesperson said.
