Year-end lesson

For many schoolchildren, this is the last week of classes before the beginning of their summer vacation. I trust that before they pack up their belongings for the last time, their teachers go over the true meaning of Memorial Day.

With their minds focused on outdoor events and overeating, it’s entirely possible they’ll forget that this special day is also about remembering people who gave up everything to insure our freedom. And that their self-sacrifice, so often misplaced (if not totally forgotten) not only saved our democracy but our enjoyment of life as well.
