Memorial Day is Monday, May 25. Memorial Day parades, services and observances throughout the suburbs will pay tribute to those U.S. military personnel who gave their lives in service of their country.

Friday, May 22

Cary’s Field of the Fallen: Opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, and closing ceremony at 5 p.m. Monday, May 25, on Three Oaks and Georgetown roads, Cary. Join the Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois as they honor Illinois soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Featuring flags, one each bearing a soldier’s name, date of death, and age starting from the Gulf conflict. Honor Illinois’s fallen heroes by standing watch, volunteering, or simply visiting. Chicago Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony & Parade: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington St., Chicago. Wreath laying ceremony at 11 a.m. Taps will be performed by the 484th Army Band, and the national anthem will be sung by U.S. Air Force veteran Morgan Renae Williams. The Major General John A. Logan Patriot Award goes to Major Karen Hernandez, executive director of Chicago Veterans and a medical services officer in the U.S. Army. This year’s grand marshal and keynote speaker is Sgt. Winfield Memorial Day ceremony: 8 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Creekside Park, 0S211 Winfield Road. Expanded as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration. Guest speaker will be Army Ranger Combat veteran Michael Goodale, who fought in the October 1993 Somalia battle depicted in the movie “Black Hawk Down.” The Winfield Boy Scouts will conduct the opening ceremony and the Winfield Middle School band will perform the national anthem. Cantigny First Division Museum will display five trunks of artifacts and uniforms from the Revolutionary, Civil War, World War I, and Desert Storm. Maple Park’s 100th annual Memorial Day services: 9:15-10:45 a.m. at seven cemeteries around the Maple Park area. Maple Park American Legion Post 312 will hand out poppies at Casey's on Friday, May 22, and place flags on the graves of service members at the cemeteries on Saturday, May 23. Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony: 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 25. 107th annual parade steps off at Arlington Heights Road and Sigwalt Street, heads west to Dunton, north on Dunton, west on Euclid Avenue, south on Fremont Street to Memorial Park on Chestnut Avenue. At 11 a.m., the ceremony honors and remembers all those who have given their lives for our freedoms, especially Arlington’s Fallen Heroes — the 68 residents who died in the service to the nation from the Civil War through Afghanistan. Algonquin Memorial Day ceremony: 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Riverfront Park, 201 N. Harrison St., Algonquin. Join the American Legion in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedom. The ceremony will include speakers, color guard and the local high school band. algonquin.org.

Aurora Memorial Day Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 25. It begins at Benton and River streets, east on Benton St. to Broadway (Route 25), north on Broadway to Downer Place, west on Downer to River Street where the parade ends. Reviewing stand in front of David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place, for best viewing. Bartlett Memorial Day Walk and Remembrance: 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Bartlett Park, Oak and North avenues. It begins with an American Legion flag retirement ceremony. Geneva Memorial Day Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 25. American Legion Fox River-Geneva Post 75 rifle salutes at Oak Hill Cemetery at 6 a.m., State Street bridge at 6:30 a.m., Kane County Memorial at 6:45 a.m., and World War I Monument at 7:10 a.m. at Geneva Township Senior Center. The parade, featuring the color guard, local veterans, city officials, and Scouts, starts on Third Street near the Geneva train station and heads north on Third to the World War I Memorial in Wheeler Park, where a ceremony will be held with Geneva High School choir and marching band. Woodstock Memorial Day Ceremony & Parade: 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, on the historic square, 121 W. Catholic Cemeteries Field Masses: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 25, at 21 cemeteries throughout Cook and Lake counties. Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Chicago will observe Memorial Day. Active members of the military and veterans will receive a special blessing during the liturgies followed by the playing of taps. Participating cemeteries include: All Saints, 700 N. Glendale Heights Memorial Day ceremony: 11 a.m. Monday, May 25, Veterans Memorial Park, 1611 Bloomingdale Road, Glendale Heights. VFW Post 2377 will conduct a “Fallen Warrior” ceremony with a flag and color guard presentation, rifle salute, and playing of taps. During this ceremony, they will highlight the new Raising Flags to New Heights program and mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The city of Wood Dale and VFW Tioga Post 2149 will host annual parade, which steps off at Addison Road and Elizabeth Drive and heads north to Veterans’ Memorial Park, 269 Irving Park Road, for the memorial service.
