Teen drowns in Lake Michigan near Waukegan harbor

A teenager who went missing while swimming with friends in Lake Michigan near Waukegan North Harbor Monday has died.

Emergency workers were called to the harbor on the 100 block of East Madison Street at about 5:30 p.m. after friends of the teen reported him missing.

Rescue crews searched along the channel and eventually located the teenage boy submerged near a break wall.

The 17-year-old boy was transported to Vista East Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

He was identified by the Lake County coroner’s office Tuesday as Gabriel Ramirez, of Waukegan. Preliminary examination indicates his death was due to drowning, officials at the coroner’s office said.

Waukegan police and the Lake County sheriff’s office continue to investigate the teen’s death.
