Two teens charged with felony weapons offenses in Aurora
Two teenagers have been charged with felony weapons offenses in Aurora, including possession of a machine gun.
Aurora police say they received information on Thursday, May 14, about two individuals displaying firearms in Aurora neighborhoods.
Investigators identified Johnathan Rios, 18, of Aurora, and a 15-year-old male juvenile as the suspects during surveillance operations on a residence, according to police.
Authorities said that when Aurora Police Department Special Operations Group investigators attempted to make contact with the two at about 8:30 p.m. that night, both ran.
The juvenile was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit, and investigators recovered a loaded silver-and-black Glock 43X 9 mm handgun from inside his waistband area, officials said. The handgun contained a loaded 10-round magazine.
According to a news release, Rios fled through nearby yards before being arrested by investigators.
During the chase, investigators observed Rios discard two firearms. Officers recovered a black Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun loaded with 13 rounds and a black Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device and loaded with a 29-round extended magazine containing three live rounds, officials said.
The second gun had been reported stolen outside of Aurora, according to police.
Investigators also recovered a box containing 50 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition from Rios during the arrest.
Neither Rios nor the juvenile possessed a valid FOID card or concealed carry license, police said.
The Kane County state’s attorney’s office charged Rios with seven felony counts, including aggravated unlawful use of a machine gun, a Class X felony.
The 15-year-old was charged with four felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible pending further forensic analysis and a review of digital evidence.
