A DNC repeat? Local Dems tout Chicago for 2028 convention

As the Second City seeks its second Democratic National Convention in a decade, party leaders are in town scrutinizing what should be familiar terrain.

On the heels of hosting the 2024 convention, top Dems including Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson are meeting with members of the DNC site selection and technical committees Monday through Wednesday.

Officials will tour the United Center, which was home to the 2024 convention, drill down into logistics, and get a sneak peek of the Obama Presidential Center, according to the Chicago 2028 Host Committee.

The DNC announced in March that the convention would take place from Aug. 7 to Aug. 10, 2028, with Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver and Philadelphia in the running for the coveted event.

The August 2024 DNC had a total economic impact of over $371 million in the region, the most in convention history, and supported 3,211 jobs, the Chicago 2024 Host Committee has reported.

A video touts Chicago’s assets, including its pushback against the Trump administration, and sneaks in an image of hometown hero Pope Leo XIV.

“We are the Second City and we are second to none,” a narrator proclaims.
