This one is for mom: Mother’s Day 5K draws 2,500 to Barrington
For many moms, the ideal Mother’s Day begins with a couple extra hours sleep followed by breakfast in bed.
Some of the other moms, though, were up and running — literally — early Sunday morning for the 17th annual Barrington Mother's Day 5K.
The run is a fundraiser for Rolling Meadows-based WINGS, which provides shelter and other assistance to survivors of domestic violence. About 2,500 runners and walkers participated, according to event organizers.
Among those taking part was Pamela Kowalczyk of Crystal Lake, who donned a robe and a curly gray wig embedded with rollers to run with the Fast Track Racing Team of Schaumburg.
“Oh, my hair is fabulous,” she joked. “I’ve having a pretty good hair day.”
First across the finish line was Nick Yanek of Barrington, with a time of 15 minutes, 59 seconds.
“Oh my gosh, so fun,” he said after the race. “It’s so exciting. My mom (Toni Yanek) is in it, it’s fun to also have her in the race. This win is for you (mom), Happy Mother’s Day and I love you.”
