Armed man surrenders after hourslong standoff at Des Plaines vape shop

A barricade situation at a Des Plaines vape shop was resolved peacefully Saturday after an hourslong standoff, authorities said.

Police responded to Vortex Vapes, 1564 Rand Road, just before 9 a.m. after a 26-year-old Des Plaines man armed with a box cutter confronted the shop employee, police said.

The employee was able to flee the business, but the suspect stayed and barricaded himself inside, police said.

The police department’s tactical response team was able to negotiate his surrender.

Other businesses in the strip mall were closed for about four hours, but reopened Saturday afternoon.

No charges were yet announced in connection with the standoff. The incident remained under investigation.
