In affordability crisis, pennies count
The U.S. eliminated the penny with President Abraham Lincoln from the Land of Lincoln engraved on each coin because it was too costly to produce, so now if your purchase costs 3 cents, you’ll need to pony up a nickel. But Governor JB raves that the 1% grocery tax was eliminated to help the affordability of residents, only to be instituted/collected by almost every city, town or suburb.
Now with the price of a gallon of gasoline further pressuring the affordability of residents, JB can’t think out of the box and defer the excise tax that his Springfield politicians recklessly passed into law in addition to the federal tax. But states like Georgia, Florida and Maryland helped the affordability for their residents by deferring collecting state taxes above the federal tax on gasoline sales at this critical time.
Remember the phrase, “every penny counts.” It’s more important today for affordability even though replaced by the nickel.
