Former Barrington man facing charges of possessing child sexual abuse materials

A 19-year-old man who moved out of Barrington has been brought back to Lake County on charges of possessing child sexual abuse materials.

Jacob Cyhaniuk faces six counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, a felony.

A Lake County grand jury indicated him Wednesday. He is scheduled for a May 12 court date.

Barrington police said detectives received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Jan. 1, 2024, regarding multiple images of suspected child sexual abuse.

Following an investigation, a search warrant was executed in early April 2024 at a residence on the 1400 block of South Shore Court in Barrington. Multiple electronic devices were seized.

The images were confirmed by the Lake County Cyber Crime Lab during a forensic analysis of the confiscated electronic devices.

An arrest warrant was obtained May 20, 2025. Shortly after, investigators learned Cyhaniuk had moved out of Illinois.

In April 2026, Cyhaniuk was arrested in another state and transported back to Illinois to answer to the child sexual abuse material charges in Lake County.
