Plant sales springing up across the suburbs: Find annuals, perennials, natives and more

We’ve put together a guide to spring plant sales across the Chicago's suburbs, featuring more than 40 sales by garden clubs and other organizations in May and June. Gardeners will find diverse selections including native plants, perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, and specialty items like organic seedlings and pollinator-friendly varieties. It’s the perfect time for a Mother’s Day gift!

Little City’s annual Plant Sale: Now through June 27, at Little City Horticulture Center, 1740 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine. Little City grows more than just flowers. When you shop the sale, you are supporting a fully operational horticulture center that doubles as a vocational skills program for individuals with developmental disabilities. Everything has been planted, nurtured, and maintained by participants at Little City, helping each to grow valuable job skills. COD Spring Plant Sale: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 7-8, at the College of DuPage Greenhouse, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The horticultural department will sell various annuals, hanging baskets and more. Native plants grown from seed collected in COD’s natural areas. Credit/debit cards, only. Parking available in front of the Technical Education Center.

MCC Spring Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 6-7, in the McHenry County College greenhouse, Building D, 8900 S. Route 14, Crystal Lake. Shop for vegetables, herbs, annual and perennial flowers, blooming containers, and hanging baskets. CLC Horticulture Department Plant Sale: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 7, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, at College of Lake County greenhouses, Building H, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. Lombard Garden Club’s Lilac Sale: Noon until sold out or 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the pavilion on the north side of Lilacia Park, near the park district administration building at 227 W. Parkside in downtown Lombard. Choose from 16 different bush cultivar and two types of lilac trees. Colors of the blooms range from deep violet, magenta and lilac to pink, blue and white. Lilacs are $38 for bushes, $55 for trees. Lilac bushes are planted in 5-gallon pots, so bring a wagon or cart. There also is a designated area where you can return pots that your lilacs came in. Proceeds support the Lombard Garden Club’s scholarship program, community beautification projects and educational outreach about the environment and gardening in our region. Naperville Garden Club annual plant sale: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, in Aero Estates at 9S031 Chandelle Drive in Naperville. It features a selection of hanging baskets, plants, and herbs. Arrive early for the best selection. The sale will be held rain or shine; cash or check only. Bloomingdale Garden Club Spring Flower & Plant Sale: Noon to 6 p.m. Friday, May 8, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Bloomingdale Park District maintenance building, 259 Springfield Drive, north end of Springfield Park, quarter-mile south of Route 20. It will feature nursery-grown annuals in flats, 4- and 6-inch pots, hanging baskets, vegetables and herbs, accessory plants, grasses, tropicals, and perennials from members’ gardens. Native plant sale: 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 8, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9, at the Maine East High School parking lot at Dee Road and Dempster Street, Park Ridge. Featuring more than 50 species of native wildflowers, grasses, and sedges; $4 each in individual 2.5-inch x 3.5-inch deep pots (plants grown by Agrecol). Native plant gardeners available for design consult at pickup. Proceeds to benefit Maine East High School Ecology Club (outdoor nature spaces) and Go Green Park Ridge​. ​Tour the Maine East oak savanna. Waukegan Park District Plant & Flower Sale: 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Urban Ag Lab at Bowen Greenhouse, 1800 N. Sheridan Road in Bowen Park. There will be a variety of vegetables, plants, flowers and herbs available for $4 to $7 per item. All proceeds will support the operations and programs at the Urban Ag Lab at Bowen Greenhouse. Palatine Garden Club Perennial Plant Sale: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, May 9 and 16, at the Palatine Farmers Market in the Metra station parking lot, 137 W. Wood St. Choose from a variety of perennial plants sourced from club members’ gardens and area native-plant nurseries. Flowering and foliage plants, many varieties of pollinator-friendly native plants, ground covers, and ornamental grasses will be available. Also this year, several varieties of milkweed — native plants that support and attract monarchs and other butterflies — will be sold, as well as Illinois prairie-garden starter flats. Algonquin Garden Club’s Spring Plant Sale: 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church parking lot, 300 Jefferson St., Algonquin. This year’s sale features an expanded selection of native Illinois perennials specifically chosen to support local pollinators, including monarch butterflies and honeybees. Also, a variety of sun and shade perennials, heirloom vegetables, and ornamental shrubs. Club members and local Master Gardeners will be on-site to offer advice on plant selection, “soft landing” techniques for trees, and sustainable gardening practices. Spring Plant Sale and Farm Festival: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Liberty Prairie Farm, 550 Harris Road, Grayslake. Annual event hosted by Liberty Prairie and Grayslake High School District 127. Highlights include sheep shearing at 12:30 p.m., along with a full schedule of family-friendly activities and farm experiences. The event features student-grown annuals, vegetables, herbs and flowers, along with native perennials from Possibility Place, as well as organic compost, mulches and garden supplies. Proceeds support hands-on education at the farm. Attendees can feed sheep and goats, listen to student music performances, walk through the community gardens, explore the farm on wagon tours, or join in a potato sack race with Summer Farm camp counselors. Des Plaines Garden Club’s Plant & Garden Flea Market: 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9, at the GEN-Center (formerly known as the Frisbie Senior Center) at 52 E. Northwest Hwy. in Des Plaines. Pick up some annuals, perennials, vegetables, a hanging basket or maybe a houseplant. Master Gardeners will be there to answer your questions and help you select plants. Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners annual plant sale: 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln St., Batavia. Most plants are sourced from members’ gardens and include natives, perennials, shrubs, and trees. Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions and provide assistance with selecting and growing the plants in your garden. The sale raises funds for the club’s activities, including college scholarships, maintaining the Wildflower Sanctuary at the Batavia Riverwalk, Kaleidoscope Planter and Peace Bridge, planters near city hall, and the Alphabet Garden at the Batavia Public Library. Greater Kane County Wild Ones Native Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday May 16, at Gray Willows Farm, 5N949 Corron Road, St. Charles. Choose from forbs, grasses, sedges, trees and shrubs from seven different vendors. Shop at Elder Oaks for organic vegetables and ice cream treats from the Milk House. New this year, sunny pollinator kit for $100. It contains 38 plugs that includes 12 species and covers 75-100 square feet. The sale is held in the restored barn loft. Choose from a variety of plant species, including vibrant flowers, hardy forbs and native grasses. Learn about eco-friendly practices that benefit your home, wallet and community. Prospect Heights Garden Club’s annual perennial sale: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the north parking section of Tony’s Fresh Market at 1241 E. Rand Road in Prospect Heights. West Chicago Garden Club plant sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, on Galena and Main streets in downtown West Chicago. Part of the city’s annual Blooming Fest, customers will find a large tent with thousands of perennials, annual flowers, and a large selection of peppers and tomatoes for sale at reasonable prices. Tree of Life Youth Group Plant Sale: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16, at Ridgefield-Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church, 8505 Church St., Ridgefield. All proceeds will fund a service-learning trip by the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation youth group to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in June. The group will learn about Lakota culture and history from Oglala Lakota elders while working on the reservation to improve living conditions for the residents. Wheaton Garden Club Plant Sale: 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at 504 Hamilton Drive, Wheaton. The sale will feature professionally grown annuals, many of which are Proven Winners. Evanston's Highland Garden Club annual Backyard Botanicals Sale: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Ackerman Park, 2500 Central St., Evanston. A variety of perennials, including native plants that work in residential gardens for bees and butterflies, will be available from gardens of club members and friends. Hoffman Estates Garden Club’s annual plant sale: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 5, at the Schaumburg Farmers Market, 190 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. Members will offer locally grown plants from their own gardens as well as some grown from seed. There will be a wide variety of sun and shade plants including perennials, annuals, dahlias, grasses, hostas, vegetables and herbs. A limited number of native plants like milkweed and coneflower will be available to help support pollinators. A portion of the sales will be donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry. Arlington Heights Garden Club plant sale: 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, In the gated area next to the Mueller House on the Arlington Heights Historical Museum grounds, 110 W. Fremont St. in Arlington Heights. Fremont street will be closed. The club’s second largest fundraiser of the year. Due to the increased incidence of jumping worms found in the area, all of the plants are raised by club members in a greenhouse from seed, cuttings, or plugs — nothing dug from the ground. St. Charles Park District Native Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles. Plants will be available for purchase on-site and while supplies last. Choose from a wide selection of plants that are native to the region. Plant varieties subject to change on the day of the event. Will County Forest Preserve District Native Plant Sale: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Isle a la Cache Preserve, 501 E. 135th St. (Romeo Road) in Romeoville. During the Pollinator Party celebration, shop a wide selection of native plants perfect for pollinators. Experts will be on hand to help you select plants and answer questions. Plus, many other free resources will be available. Plants will be $3 per plug, and they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
